A Letter to Parents of Special Needs Kids

Good Morning Parents:

Picture this: You're talking on the phone when you notice your child is not in the room. You call out and there's no response, you call again, and still no response. You quickly hang up the phone and start looking. The back door is wide open and your child is nowhere in sight. The adrenaline starts pumping, your heart is pounding and panic sets in. Your child with special needs has run off. The clock starts ticking, time now becomes your enemy. Finding your child as quickly as possible is your #1 priority.

Your child is gone. Every passing minute seems like an hour. Now imagine if this happened in the middle of the night, at the mall, on vacation, or at grandma and grandpa's. You have given new meaning to the words stressed out. You haven't had a good night's sleep in ages because you're always sleeping with one eye open. Waiting and listening just in case your child gets out of bed and walks out the front door or climbs out a window. Or maybe you decided the best place to sleep is across the front door. Sleep is illusive because you don't really sleep anymore; you just pass out from exhaustion. Time to just sit down and eat is an elusive luxury.

These are just some of the comments I have heard over the years from parents like you who have a child with special needs. The stress can be overwhelming even on a "good" day. We can help. Although we don't have all the answers, we do have an answer for parents with kids who wander off or bolt and run. Nationwide, dozens of parents just like you have made the investment in Care Trak equipment. In fact, over 300 police departments use our larger capacity (locates up to 200 people) Mobile Locater in cities across the country to locate special needs kids with Autism, Down Syndrome, Prader-Willi Syndrome, Williams Syndrome, Soto Syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and other conditions. We also monitor seniors who suffer from Alzheimer's disease.

The Care Trak Mobile Locater can locate a missing child up to a mile away day or night, inside or outside. Within moments you can determine the direction your child has gone. You immediately eliminate 90% of the search area in seconds and start heading in the right direction the first time. Even if it's pitch dark outside, with no moonlight, and you can't see the hand in front of your face, the Mobile Locater will pinpoint the direction of your child. And because the Mobile Locater is 100% portable, you can take it along on hikes, vacations, to school and to the grandparents. The Mobile Locater operates much like an antenna rotor on a TV set. The rotor turns the antenna until you get the best picture on the TV set. This happens because the antenna is pointed at the local TV station's broadcast tower.

The Care Trak Perimeter System establishes an invisible boundary around your home that will alert you if your child leaves the yard! The monitored area is adjustable by the turn of a knob and there is no installation required and no buried wires. The unit can be operated on batteries for camping and hiking trips. When your child crosses the invisible boundary you have set, an alarm alerts you. During the day you can expand the area to give your child freedom to play outside and have a good time. At bedtime, you adjust the perimetered area in close, so if your child leaves in the middle of the night, the alarm will sound quicker. The Perimeter System INCLUDES the above Mobile Locater, so you still have the instant ability to track your child.

Care Trak Home Products were specifically designed to reduce your stress by monitoring and locating victims of Alzheimer's disease and kids with special needs. Police in hundreds of communities across the US now use the Mobile Locater to find special needs kids and seniors with dementia.

Care Trak is a division of Wildlife Materials International, Inc. WMI has been the industry leader in monitoring and tracking endangered species around the world for over three decades. You have seen our equipment in action on TV shows like Wild Kingdom, Nature, NOVA, National Geographic, 60 Minutes and on the NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw, and many more. We are proud of our association with the National Audubon Society, the Smithsonian Institute, Auburn University and dozens more. Care Trak is an extension of this technology, specialized in monitoring and locating people with special needs. All Care Trak systems are built by hand to the highest professional standards required of our professional research equipment. There is no such thing as a consumer version of our equipment. This attention to detail assures you the best possible protection for your child when you are involved.

So what is the downside? Practice makes perfect. You have to practice with the Mobile Locater to get really good at it. We expect you to practice playing hide and seek at least once a month. You want to be prepared for an emergency at all times. You will also have to practice with a number of people to be sure that if you are not around someone knows how to use the equipment. You must check the operation of the transmitter twice a day. And without fail, change the battery in the transmitter on the same day every month! Occasionally the Perimeter System will false alarm. This usually occurs when your child gets behind a metal object, like a car in the driveway. Most parents gladly live with a few false alarms when they know their child is protected.

Please understand, when you call we may ask you some questions that may seem odd or even somewhat personal. The more we know about your child and your family situation the better we can serve your specific needs.

Important Safety Notice on Global Positioning Systems (GPS):

Care Trak is NOT a Global Positioning System (GPS). GPS systems do not work well with Alzheimer's wanderers or special needs kids. GPS signals depend on orbiting satellites. As a rule of thumb, any object that blocks sunlight will block a GPS signal. Alzheimer's victims and special needs children are unaware that they are lost, and will not move to an open area in order to send a GPS signal to an orbiting satellite.
